Adelia Borges throws the book Craft + Design: the Brazilian way
The curator, writer and professor of design history, Adelia Borges, launches on February 2 in Sao Paulo, in the House - Museum Object of Brazil, the book Craft + Design: the way Brazil (Third Publisher Name), which is A radiograph of the recent revitalization of the object handmade Brazilian. It stems from the approximation of the fields of design and craft activities that were hitherto seen as in opposition and now complement each other. In communities across the country, initiatives marked by entrepreneurship and social innovation bring new impetus to local sustainable development. This phenomenon has been occurring, especially since the mid-1990s, and she accompanies its manifestations since then, allowing you to analyze successes and mistakes of the roads traveled and make inquiries for the future.
There will also be releases in Rio de Janeiro on 9/2 at the Museum of Modern Art, New Drawing tel. (21) 2524-2290 ; in Belo Horizonte, 8/2, Sion Carmo, Fall 81 tel (31) 3286 - 4650 , in Recife, in 13/3 at the Museum of Man in the Northeast tel (81) 3073-6332.
Richly illustrated, the book has 240 pages and editions in Portuguese and English. The event is sponsored by the National Bank of Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and the advertising agency Leo Burnett Taylor Made (LBTM), with support from the Ministry of Culture through the Rouanet Law.
"There is no standard procedure or a prescription for action to revitalize the craft - and could not be otherwise, because different situations require different responses," said Adelia Borges in the book. "If there is no single answer, there are some assumptions. The observation and analysis of what pre-exists in a particular place are essential conditions to plot a strategy for working a case. "
With nearly three decades of dedication to the study design, Adelia Borges makes a thorough review of actions taken throughout the country and weakens the prejudice which attaches to the connotation of inferiority that is handmade and superiority that is designed by the intellect.
"In a broader view of related public policies, I hope the book can help in spreading through Latin America initiatives for rehabilitation of the handmade object," writes the author. "We have poverty but we have shortcomings, many. But we also have a potential that is in our materials and our ability to transform them, an individual and collective capital that can be transformed into capital. "
About the future of the craft, Adelia Borges is categorically disagree with that claim to its end for decades. "The predictions of disappearance is not confirmed. There are several indications to the contrary, that the place of craft in contemporary society is expanding, "writes the author. "This growth is lastreia no longer merely the ability of objects to serve its function, but in its symbolic dimension. In this reinterpretation, which now counts is the ability of objects to contribute to the user values that have been recognized more recently, such as warmth, uniqueness and belonging. "
Ceramics with motifs of rock paintings in Piauí; mass bowls made of recycled cardboard and banana fibers in Minas Gerais, annatto seeds used as a dye for fabric in the Amazon, the reverse and the right with equal importance on a mat in Rio de nozinhos January, flowers made of fish leather in Mato Grosso do Sul, bags and baskets made of golden grass in Tocantins, the local fauna becoming original parts in Rio Grande do Sul These and many other cases, its scope, potential and risks, are the object of provoking analysis Adelia Borges.
The potential audience of the publication is broad, encompassing people that are interested in design and the cultural expressions and handicrafts as well as those who bet on the processing power resulting from the social entrepreneurship and solidarity economy.
